TMU Research Group on Harmful Product Industries (TRG-HPI)

TMU Research Group on Harmful Products Industries is a group of multidisciplinary researchers working on providing academic and practical evidence for the development of government policies on preventing and controlling the impacts of products and industries that are harmful to the human society and the environment.

Our focused products currently are tobacco, alcoholic and sugar-sweetened beverages, with research evidence on the economics of consumption, marketing, industry tactics for the purpose of developing and monitoring policies on taxations, marketing and controlling the commercial determinants of health.

The research group combines expertise from economics, business & finance, marketing & branding to IT experts and data scientists. The group also has priority on real-life research and maintaining connections with government agencies.

Thuongmai University

Thuongmai University (TMU), formerly known as Vietnam University of Commerce, is a public education institution under the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training. TMU has two campuses. Its main campus is located at No. 79 Ho Tung Mau Road, Cau Giay District, Hanoi, Vietnam. Its second campus is in Phu Ly, Ha Nam province.

TMU is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary university. It ranks among the top universities in Vietnam in business and economics. The university operates with autonomy, while still maintaining accessibility for the lower income. Established in 1960, the university has built-up a high-capacity professional staff, with 3 Professors, 42 Associate Professors; 130 Doctors and more than 400 Masters. The university offers a variety of majors, consisting of 19 Bachelor programs, 6 Master programs and 5 PhD programs in the fields of administration, economics and finance, etc. Annually, TMU recruits more than 4000 full time students for standard programs and 800 students for international joint-degree programs.

TMU has been working both improving teaching quality as well as research quality. For teaching, TMU is continuingly expanding and adapting its training programs according to job markets and is putting more efforts on internationalization by developing joint-degree programs with universities in the world. For research, TMU has been providing research services for the government at central and provincial levels. For the past five years, TMU has been boosting up its research activities by forming specialized research working groups, providing more incentives for research projects and publications. In 2018, TMU has also issued its research priorities for the period from 2018 to 2015 as strategic guidelines for staff.

The IT-Economics Research Working Group

The IT-Economics Research Working Group initially was formed in 2015 and carried out various recognized research activities. The group is led by Mr. Dao The Son (with background in applied economics) and Mr. Cu Nguyen Giap (with background in applied computer science) with an objective of forming a multi-discipline research group working.

Acknowledging the team’s contribution to TMU research achievement, in 2017 it was officially established as one of the first TMU’s 13 specialized research working groups to further strengthen the university’s research activities and international publications.

Objectives

We position our group as a multi-discipline research group to work not only on the academic side but also on practical issues to provide research services for government policy and business practices.

The group has researchers with diversified expertise in economics, business, international trade, mathematics and computer science. Our ultimate goals are to identify, address and find solutions for practical issues in various thematic areas of economics and business. In doing so, the group intends to apply a combination of different relevant research methodologies with a focus on applying advanced data science techniques.

The team has extensive experiences and interest in

  • The economics of tobacco control policies, with focus on the economics of tobacco consumption, tobacco taxation, illicit trade, cigarette retail network, etc.
  • The economics of alcohol consumption and taxation.
  • International trade agreements.
  • The application of sharing economy in agriculture export supply chain.
  • The application of machine learning in firm performance management.
  • The application of machine learning in higher education student performance prediction management.

Other research topics that we are also exploring includes

  • Using data science for macroeconomic forecasting.
  • Aging and population development.
  • Sustainable banking, green banking.
